bar codes
by i.d. (id@disinfo.com) - May 14, 2001
Bar codes may be old school, but we need to give credit where credit is due.

They were the very first widely-used Ubiquitous Electronic Identifier and have outlasted all others of their ilk. Besides, they led the way, opened the door, and kicked in the latest craze of biometric identification technologies.

Even though most of us associate them with those omnipresent black and white lines on everything from cling peaches to Hello Kitty merch, bar codes have evolved with the times. You can probably find a prime example of the newfangled 2D bar codes, which hold considerably more information than their forbearers, on the back of your driver's license.

So if you've been waiting to find out exactly what those funny little black and white patterns mean, now's your chance.

Are they really just one more innocuous way to streamline the consumption process, or could they be a true sign of the End Times?

Read on and decide foryourself.
