British author Graham Hancock has propelled himself into the center of vigorous debate over the origins of humanity by challenging long-accepted theories on the history of key archaeological monuments around the world. Hancock started his career as a freelance reporter for the Economist, producing books like 'Lords of Poverty: the Power, Prestige, and Corruption of the International Aid Business', but first gained massive notoriety with the 1995 'para-science' publishing phenomenon 'Fingerprints of the Gods'. The book examines similarities between the pyramids in Egypt and Latin American temples, while proposing the possibility of a lost ancient 'Atlantis' civilization in Antarctica as an explanation for their structural unity.

In his more recent works, with the assistance of his sometime co-author Robert Bauval, Hancock has reinterpreted Egyptian sources to create a radically new historical timeline, which identifies the monuments at Giza as being far older than previously assumed; he also effectively taps into millennial anxieties by acknowledging the Egyptians' belief in a cycle of world-destroying cataclysms, the next of which, he postulates, may be alarmingly soon.

Even those who dismiss Hancock as a 'pseudo-scientist' or 'New Age David Attenborough' will grudgingly admit that he tells an awfully good story (having sold upwards of five million books, he must be doing something right), and although you may not entirely swallow his hypothesis that the Cydonia region on Mars houses pyramids linking ancient Earth cultures to life in outer space, there is definitely enough compelling research here to warrant further exploration. Hancock is probably the most popular writer on ancient history and archaeology alive, and maybe it required someone from outside the established disciplines to finally inject some imagination into the discussion of the world's most mysterious places.

Includes a detailed position statement from Hancock regarding the possibility of undiscovered chambers under the Sphinx that could reveal it to be far more ancient than previously assumed. There's also a statement Bauval on the 'Wider Plan' theory. Briefly put, the angles of the Nile correspond to those of certain celestial bodies; taking into account the mythological significance these constellations held to the ancient Egyptians, the river can be viewed as a time-map which shows a far older historical memory than was previously assumed. Adding to the esoterica is the contention that there are recurring patterns in pictures of the Cydonia region of Mars that recall prominent motifs of the Giza monuments. This site even includes an interview with Dr. Zahi Hawass, Egypt's Chief Inspector of Antiquities and the arch-nemesis of our intrepid heroes.

The Modern Riddle of the Sphinx
