It's hard to nail down Discordians - which figures, since they're dedicated to the sowing of Discord, generally of the mental kind. They don't damage the physical world much in worship of sexy ol' Eris, Goddess of Chaos. Discordians all work, I mean play, in their spare time, on Operation Mindfuck - an insidious yet disorganized attempt to tear down your old mental paradigms without offering anything with which to replace them. Techniques include everything from elaborate pranks, to . . .well, simple pranks. Sort of a Zen version of the Merry Pranksters.
~ ~ Reverend Ivan Stang, 'High Weirdness By Mail' (Fireside Books, 1988). In 1958 Greg Hill and Kerry Thornley established the 'Paratheoanametamystikhood of Eris Esoteric' (POEE). They put together a book they called the 'Principia Discordia', a book which influenced pop culture in ways that they probably did not suspect.
Discordianism is a philosophy for some, a religion for others. It can be practiced alone or in conjunction with another philosophy or religion with few modifications. It centers around Eris, Greek Goddess of Discord and Confusion. Eris was not invited to a wedding banquet on Olympus and because of this, to make a long story short, she started the Trojan War. Ok, so she didn't start it personally. But she knew what she was doing!
Since the 'Principia Discordia' first surfaced, countless pop culture icons have been Touched by the Five Fingered Hand of Eris, thereby touching each of us. Discordians were the main characters in Bob Shea and Robert Anton Wilson's classic 'Illuminatus! Trilogy' satire (Dell Books, 1975). British pop music sensation 'The KLF' took their original name ('The Justified Ancients of Mummu') directly from 'Illuminatus!' where the JAMs were a sect of the Discordian movement. Discordianism pops up every once in a while in Grant Morrison's influential 'Invisibles' comic series. Countless movies, books, and television shows may have been influenced by Discordianism. Even the 'Church of the Sub-Genius' was Discordian inspired: they'll deny it though, but don't believe them!
