Both Day of the Dolphins (1973) and Altered States (1980) were based on the work of John Lilly. He's a real life Dr. Doolittle who can communicate with dolphins as well as the intrepid 'psychonaut' who pioneered the exploration of new areas of consciousness with his use of LSD and Ketamine in isolation tanks. Lilly has also written several books (most notably The Scientist and Simulations of God) describing his experiences with non-human spiiritual entities encountered in the tanks and of strange coincidences and synchronicity he believes are the workings of these entities, who he refers to as ECCO. or Earth Coincidence Control Office.
