A Jackson County judge on Thursday sentenced to probation a former liquor store employee who beat a homeless man to death.
Circuit Judge John Torrence earlier had found Joseph A. Perez, 28, guilty of involuntary manslaughter in a trial without a jury.
On Thursday, the judge called the death of Cecil Meadors, 54, a senseless tragedy, but he declined to send Perez to prison.
"He lost his temper and did something he shouldn't have done," Torrence said of Perez. "Probation is no picnic."
